The Graveyard Shift

The mentor assassin was somewhat of a modern day nomad, moving from place to place to where she was needed. It was not unusual for her, the process of packing up her belongings and throwing them into her car, moving from bureau to bureau, apartment to apartment. At least the process was much faster nowadays and overall it was rather… painless.

Shadow found herself here to fulfil a mission, as usually is the case, but work was rather slow meaning the assassin had time to work on her skills to keep them clean and smooth. The shooting range gave her an opportunity to practice, without drawing unnecessary attention to herself. It offered a variety of weapons to hone her skills, despite the fact she would take her blades over a gun any day but practicality trumps her own preferences. At the time she would be there… it would be empty… or so she thought. Since she usually slept during the day, she didn’t think anyone but the range owner would be there at night. At first she thought it was a fluke but it kept happening… of course why he was here at this hour was none of her business… but… she was trained to investigate that which she found to be usual.

It was common for people to work nights shifts and sleep during the day, but the others that they were both there seemed to break from that framework. Of course her stay at the range was sporadic, being called away for updates and new discoveries and may have missed things… but it still begged the question. Call her paranoid but maybe he was here for some similar reason she was there, her mind was screaming at her. It was probably nothing… and a little social interaction… wouldn’t be that bad.

One night she decided she was going to approach him, deliberately having a rather poor performance, noticing he was certainly not.

The assassin leaves out a groan of disappointment, almost sounding tired.

“Two misses again…” she put her gun down as the targets came forward she looked to his.

“But yet again you aced it… it seems like being stuck with the graveyard shift is not affecting you at all!”

So he was also visiting here, interesting they chose to spend their time in the same place, even if his reason for being her was much more justified. She sat into the car passenger side, putting on her belt as she did so.

Not at all, I am working as a consultant historian there’s a group of archaeologists working nearby, they have only permission to work at night, I felt I would be better help by being awake too in case they find something urgent or need help…

She smiled as she waited for him to get in too, hoping her answer would be sufficient.

I would appreciate the ride… it was such a fine evening and was still bright out, I couldn’t resist the walk

She smiled at him, heading to the door right after him, giving a gentle bow of her head and a quiet Thank you as she passed him into the cold morning air.

Not very long” she paused a moment to think It would be about two or three months… gosh time flies… although I have no fixed arrangements I imagine work will be slow here and my stay will be long

Yes she was bringing up work again, but she had her story straightened out for sure. The idea was to limit contact to other people but being a recluse also drew attention. She had a few alibis but she determined which one she’s go for.

How about you? Are you stationed nearby?

The assassin started walking to the only car in the lot, assuming it was his and waited for him to unlock it. There was due caution getting into a car with a stranger at the best of times… but she was very much on high alert and can handle herself… he would be a fool to try anything.

Oh good, he didn’t pry further. It was for the best she didn’t begin to specify after a military person would see through her ‘I work for a security firm’ lie, even if it was technically true. Maybe this time she go down a scholarly route… but on call? A consultant scholar of… history? Yes that works.

It is a good thing to keep your skills sharp…. in all professions.

She mirrored his movements, putting the gun down and starting to tidy up her other equipment.

“Sure! I pass a place not far from here almost everyday and I’ve been meaning to try it, unless you have another one you wish to go to” she smiled, surprised with his offer

This quick chat was turning into a … longer chat. Of course it meant she could find more information but as with normal conversation she would have to reveal some information.

Why did we stop with ballroom dances??? Like seriously to waltz around a room with a handsome stranger to classical music while others look at us with envy and after the music ends both of you with flushed cheeks, breathing fast, the sexual tension ; that was the shit.

I would appreciate the help

She replied honestly, but did not know at the moment if she should continue to fake being quite this bad to miss or to return to her own standard.

No… thank you

There it was, the question she was burning to ask, but was surprised to hear them coming from him. Regardless she didn’t move nor even he’s it taste to answer.

“The same question could be asked of you could it not?” She laughed a beat.

“I work on call and the night shift, with work being rather slow, I have the opportunity to enjoy myself. How about you? What is your excuse?”

Marcus enjoyed staying late at night and practicing at the shooting range when he could. He never needed the sleep and did a lot of his work at night. He smiled when he noticed the fact he acted his shooting again.

His body tensed when he heard the other but soon relaxed. He felt bad. She meant no harm, he was just started easily as he tried to run from assassins and hunters alike.

“You didn’t do too bad yourself. Only two missed shots. That’s still impressive.” His deep voice spoke as he looked over her sheet. “Besides I have a certain way that I shoot. I never miss.”

Shadow observed his reaction to her, the tension… it did explain why he had not approached her before and she felt a pang of guilt for disturbing someone who wanted to be left very much alone. But those that want to hide something always wanted to remain isolated, not to draw attention to themselves. She had to stop this way of thinking,  it was bordering on paranoia at this point… but in her career it was never a bad thing to be… too careful.

You wouldn’t feel like exposing your secret by any chance? Even on good days I can’t say with such confidence I would never miss.

The assassin smirked at him, tilting her head curiously to see what answer he would give.
